I deal with uncertainty-with uncertainty

How do you deal with uncertainty?

How do you deal with uncertainty?
My answer is rather simple: I deal  uncertainty with uncertainty.

I don’t always try to predict what is going to happen. I don’t have a fixed response prepared for every possible situation. I let the situation come, understand it at that moment, and respond to it appropriately.

Because the truth is, uncertainty cannot really be eliminated from life. We can make plans, calculate risks and prepare ourselves, but there will always be something we did not anticipate.

And perhaps that is not a weakness of life. Perhaps that is what makes us stronger.

Think of a player walking onto a cricket field.
He does not know exactly where the ball will come from. He does not know what his opponent will do. He cannot prepare a separate response for every possible movement. What he can do is train.

He trains again and again.

He practices the same movements until they become almost unconscious. He builds strength, reflexes, judgement and confidence. So when the unexpected ball comes, he doesn’t stop and think, “What should I do now?”

He responds.

The quality of his preparation is revealed in the quality of his instant response.

That, to me, is also how life works.

We cannot prepare specifically for every uncertainty. But we can prepare ourselves.

We can develop patience so that we don’t panic when something goes wrong. We can develop knowledge so that we can understand a new situation quickly. We can develop courage so that we can act when there is no guarantee of success. We can develop experience so that even when the situation is unfamiliar, something within us knows what to do.

In that sense, preparation is not about knowing the future.
Preparation is about becoming capable of responding to whatever the future brings.

This is why I don’t believe in having a fixed response to uncertainty.

The situation decides the response.

What matters is whether we have developed ourselves enough to respond well when the moment arrives.

And there is another interesting thing about uncertainty.

If everything in life were certain, predictable and known in advance, much of the charm would disappear.

Imagine watching a cricket match where you already knew every ball, every shot and the final score. There would be no excitement. No anticipation. No possibility. No real test of skill.

It is the uncertainty that makes the game a game.

Life is similar.

We often wish for certainty because uncertainty makes us uncomfortable. But perhaps we should look at it differently.

Uncertainty is the playing field on which our preparation, character and instincts are tested.
We don’t become tough when life becomes predictable.

We become tough because life keeps surprising us—and we learn to respond.
perhaps the best way to deal with uncertainty is not to defeat it, predict it or fear it.
Let it come.
And respond.
