What’s a moment when a stranger completely restored your faith in people?
When I look back at my life, I realise that some of the most important people in it were once complete strangers.
When I was growing up, I met a driver who had just joined us. At that time, he was simply a stranger doing his job. Over the years, we travelled thousands of kilometres together, shared countless experiences, and gradually became like family.
When I was a student, I started accompanying my father to his factory. His colleagues were strangers to me then.
Slowly, they became my mentors, teachers and guides. Many of them have since retired, but even today they remember me and send their good wishes.
What began as a simple introduction grew into relationships that have lasted for decades.
The same happened at school. On the first day, my fellow students and teachers were strangers.
With time, some became close friends, while others became guides who influenced the person I eventually became.
Later, when I went to boarding school for further education, I experienced something very different. For the first few days, I felt completely lost among strangers.
But gradually, those strangers became friends. The people in the mess, the hostel staff, teachers and fellow students slowly became a community.
A place that initially felt unfamiliar eventually became a place where I belonged.
Years later, when I moved to a small town to start my business, I again found myself surrounded by people I did not know.
There was no familiar face around me. But slowly, the people around me became acquaintances, acquaintances became friends, and some eventually became mentors and guides.
In those early years of business, they helped me navigate professional challenges and supported me through difficulties I could not have handled alone.
Looking back, I realise something profound: almost every brick in the foundation of my life was laid by people I did not know when I first met them.
Perhaps that is why I don’t think there was one single moment when a stranger restored my faith in people. It happened repeatedly, throughout my life.
We often look at strangers as people who are unknown to us. But a stranger is simply someone whose story we have not yet heard and whose friendship we have not yet discovered.
Our first line of support is often closer than we realise — our neighbours, colleagues and friends. All they need is communication and a little openness.
Life can feel dull when we remain surrounded by strangers and never make the effort to know them. But start a conversation, open up, listen to someone, and suddenly a completely new world can open up.
Every stranger is a door to a new world.
So make friends. Talk to people. Open yourself to new relationships. You may be surprised to discover that the world is not full of strangers at all.
It is full of amazing people we simply haven’t met yet.
What a beautiful and deeply personal reflection on how strangers gradually become the people who shape our lives. ❤️
I especially loved the thought that “almost every brick in the foundation of my life was laid by people I did not know when I first met them.” It beautifully captures how mentors, friends, colleagues, neighbours, teachers, and even people we meet unexpectedly can quietly influence our journey.
