karma

Hindu mythology attributes our present condition and the state we are in, to the theory of karma. Karma or karm in Hindi means action.

Every situation we are facing right now is the result of the actions or karma of the past.

In present situation whatever action we are taking will result in building karma for future. Future situations will be according to what we are doing today.

So in a sense, all our thoughts and actions and energies come back to us in some form,in future, even maybe in next life. This is the explanation in hindu religion when someone is born in luxury, good health, higher intelligence and there are others who are not so lucky.

Now according to hindu mythology, every person wishes to be free from the cycles of life and death. This can only happen when new karmas do not build while old karmas are dealt with.

When all our actions build karma then how can we have a situation when our present actions do not build further karmas.

Now see what happens in case of animals.

Hindu mythology says animals do not accumulate karma. Why? they kill, fight, hurt and then also they do not build karma? It is because animals do not have thinking and analysing faculty like humans. Their actions are on impulse, depending on the situation with no thought of past or future.

So if we humans also do the same , that is, put our mind in present, be aware of the present moment, perform actions as required without any judgement, take care that our actions are not based on past memories or future thoughts, then we will not accumulate any karma.

Isn’t it the same thing that all thinkers have been telling us. Don’t dwell in past, no use of thinking of future but be in the present moment.
