Walk Diaries – chandni chowk

Chandni chowk never ceases to amaze me. Whenever there is a chance to go to that part of Delhi, I try to take a walk in the lanes and side lanes of Chandni chowk. The place is so packed with narrow lanes, tiny shops, living quarters that every time I see something new. Everytime eye catches an old structure sticking its neck out of the repainted, refurbished ones.

This time the streets seemed wide, very neat and clean and it was a pleasure to take a walk.

Every old city has different vibrations. You feel as if someone is trying to talk to you. Chandni chowk has a history of hundreds of years. Today it is a potpourri of heritage, business and food.

Talking of food, how can you miss the traditional spicy bedmi poori served with chickpeas, potato curry and sweet-sour pickle.

And if you still have apetite , chole – Bhatura ( chickpeas – fried flatbread) takes you to next level of calorie indulgence. The chickpeas here and with Bedmi poori are different. Except for the pickle, each recipe is different.

I have never understood why food at old delhi is so spicy. Maybe due to hot weather for most of the months in a year, spices were used to prevent bacteria growth in food preparations. Generally hot climates have spicier foods.

So definately you need something sweet to quench the belly fire and this time I had sweet lassi ( A thick curd- water combination) laden with saffron and dry fruits.

Though it was a soul satisfying visit today but a part of me still lives there and I shall be back there again.
