I would feel relaxed!

Daily writing prompt
Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

It was the other day when my laptop needed repair. That day I had practically nothing to do. Though my job is not IT or computer-based, work depends on computers as everything has become paperless.

That day, I just relaxed, watched others work, had coffee a few times, did what my mind remembered from the “To Do list” and talked to vendors and customers. For many, I heard their voices after a long time as most of the communication was via email. They too were pleasantly surprised.

I was home on time and felt happy. I remembered the days when I started a business and there were no computers, Microsoft, google, or mobiles and we did business the old-fashioned way. By that time telex and fax had started coming and we were awestruck with the technology.

Memory was sharper, we remembered most of the phone numbers, all financial data were clear in mind and there used to be one diary, one pocket diary, and one pen which were our prized possessions.

Thinking of those prized possessions, I walked to the bookshelf where I found my ink pen in deep slumber with no hope of waking up again. I took it in hand, and it felt familiar. How I loved writing and now even I cannot read my own handwriting. The ink pot had gone dry, and the diary had aged. Its pages had turned yellow. But it had the familiar lovely paper smell. I caressed all my favorite darlings. I gave them hope that someday they may come out of the closet when I decide or am forced to live a life without computers.

I felt nostalgic. I remember, I had more life in me when the majority of communication was vocal, when most of the meetings were in person, and when most of the writing was by hand. No doubt the pace was slow, but we progressed.

when computers came, we were happy as they assisted us in improving our productivity. Slowly they became masters and started driving us with message notifications, to-do lists and as computers became faster, we had to move faster to cope up with them. Now gadgets have become masters and humans have become machines.

Life without computers – I wish we had few no-computers days in a month. After all our minds do need a break.
